A Folland Gnat wing from N572XR has hung above the MotoArt Studio since MotoArt owner Dave Hall acquired it in 2011. In 2022, Hall decided it was time to bring it down and share this iconic symbol with the rest of the world. Introducing Folland Gnat PlaneTags from MotoArt.

The iconic Folland Gnat is a small, swept wing subsonic fighter, built in the United Kingdom by Folland Aircraft. The Gnat was designed to be a compact, simplified fighter aircraft that could be manufactured inexpensively and with tools and facilities accessible to less industrialized nations. Gnats were purchased or licensed to build by export customers, including Finland, India, and Yugoslavia who flew the Gnat in both combat and training capacities. 449 were built. They were adopted by the Royal Air Force as trainers, then later flown by their Yellowjacks and Red Arrows aerobatic display teams.

OUR PLANE'S STORY

N572XR was built as a Gnat T.1 trainer in 1963 and delivered to the RAF November 1, 1963. It was first used to train RAF pilots in the Fast Jet track, and by August 1974, it joined an elite team of 9 Folland Gnats as part of the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows. N572XR was part of a world-class aerobatics team representing the speed, precision, and capabilities of the Royal Air Force. After retirement, N572XR was bought by a private owner in 1989. MotoArt was able to secure the original wing, which had been replaced after being damaged. Read more about it on the PlaneTags blog: Folland Gnat: The RAF Red Arrows Display Team Star

The Folland Gnat, with its unmistakable silhouette in the Diamond Nine formation, represents not only the technical skill and aerobatic mastery of the RAF, but also the proud heritage of British aviation. MotoArt is truly honored to offer Folland Gnat PlaneTags. Collect one for yourself or give an amazing gift to your favorite Red Arrows fan.

PlaneTags are:

      • Authentic - made from actual retired aircraft fuselage, not merely stamped metal.
      • Unique -  each PlaneTag bears the color, thickness, and wear and tear from the portion of the fuselage from which it was cut and it is therefore rare to create two identical PlaneTags.
      • Collectible - each one is numbered in a limited edition and comes attached to a display card.
      • Versatile - comes with a durable metal ring, strong enough to attach to luggage or keys or display.

    Long Live the Gnat!

What a great release! The roundel colors are perfect and the 6-set of solids and combos looks great together! Being extra thick makes the tags even more awesome!

Was fortunate enough to get a insignia color. Happily got a thick white blue combo variant and it is so gorgeous.

    Folland Gnat T.1 XR572

SN: XR572 #0569 of 1,350 A nice tag slightly bend following the contour of the aircraft I guess, The tag from planetag/MotoArt is nice & clean as usual, clean/sharp engraving of an aircraft with a Royal past and duty. This, like most of my tags, has a story for me. The first time I saw/learned about this plane was in the mid 70s as a plastic 1/72 scale Matchbox model displayed during X-mas at a toy store in my town. This was a promised/requested X-mas present that never was. The model was already sold by the time we went to get it. thirty plus years later I found the plastic kit on an aviation/hobby event. Having this tag is more gravy on my potatoes, yum!!

    GNAT

Managed a Red/Blue and a Red but wishing I had gotten an Insignia as well...such a wonderful release with tons of history! Also like that it hung on the MA wall for quite a while.

Brought A (RED) RED Arrow Back Home.

Amazing piece the RED jumps off the self. Nice touch doing it for the celebration for the old queen.

Brought a (red) red arrow back home.

Lovely sentiment to mark the queen's celebrations with something painfully British. Lovely crisp piece. Certainly a fave of my collection.

    Great momento

My daughter bought this for me as a Father’s Day gift, I used to service, ground run and taxi this aircraft regularly and at the end of its service life I was part of the team that prepped it for its road journey to a new owner in the 80’s. Very pleased to have a part of it that I will have touched on an almost daily basis.

Bought for a Friend as a Thank You!

I bought this particular plane tag for a friend as a thank you. Being a native of Britain, he immediately recognized it and was stoked to have it in his collection!

    Happy memories

We used to travel to air shows around the UK to watch the Red Arrows when our children were young so it is possible that we actually saw this plane fly. My son was pleased to receive this tag as an unexpected gift. Good quality and service as usual. Folland Gnat T.1XR572- Red

    Great Addition To My Collection

This is without a doubt the most historically significant tags that I have purchased to date. It is great to see that this wing was saved from scrap and given a new purpose in saving a bit of aviation history!
